Janet Wooten is thrilled to be back with the Savannah Children’s Choir this season. Mrs. Wooten joined the artistic staff of the Savannah Children’s Choir in the winter of 2015 as the director of the Preparatory Choir. In the fall of 2017, she began her role as SCC’s Artistic Director. Mrs. Wooten also serves as a music educator in the Chatham County Public School System, where she was named Teacher of the Year in 2007.Prior to settling in Savannah, she taught music at the high school and collegiate levels. In addition to nearly 20 years in the classroom, Mrs. Wooten is a private voice instructor, serving students of many ages and abilities and teaches music in the special needs ministry at Bible Baptist Church.
Under Mrs. Wooten’s sole direction, the Hesse Choral Program grew from seventy choral students to over one hundred and fifty choral students consisting of four performing choirs in just under a three year period. The Hesse Choral Program has consistently received superior ratings at all Large Group Performance Evaluations for stage performance and sight-reading abilities.
Mrs. Wooten continues to share her love of gospel music through The North Georgia School of Gospel Music. She participates in a two-week camp held every summer on the campus of North Georgia College. Students of all ages and abilities come together to grow their talents and skills of southern gospel music. Mrs. Wooten instructs a variety of classes to include Solfège through shaped noted singing, aural skills, theory, conducting and ensemble.
Mrs. Wooten studied voice with Dr. Brian Horne and Ms. Joan Wall, and has performed with the Bedford (Texas) Opera Company. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Shorter University in Rome, Georgia and her Master’s degree in Vocal Pedagogy from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas.Her professional affiliations include National Association of Teachers and Singing (NATS), National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA).
Mrs. Wooten resides in Savannah, GA with her husband, Jody and their three children-James, Jaci and Joseph.
