Esperanza Spalding
2010 Artist-in-Residence

The Savann
ah Children's Choir announces their 2010 Artist-in-Residence, Esperanza Spalding.

At age 4, inspired by cellist Yo Yo Ma on an episode of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, Ms. Spalding taught herself to play the vioin, and later moved on to the bass.

Growing up in a single-parent home in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood in Portland, OR, she suffered from learning disabilities and a lengthy childhood illness.  She learned lessons of perseverance and moral strength from her best role model, her mother.  As a high school drop-out, she finished her GED and then went on to the prestigious Berklee College of Music.  After graduating, she became the youngest faculty member in the history of the institution.  She now tours internationally as a jazz artist.

While in Savannah, she will rehearse and perform with the Savannah Children's Choir on Tuesday, March 9, and visit local schools to share her experience of music and hard work.

Senior Choir to attend Windy City Youth Choral Festival in June

What is the Savannah Children's Choir?

The Savannah Children's Choir is an auditioned, community choir with a mission of uniting Savannah's children through the power of song.

Currently, the SCC consists of two choirs, the Preparatory and the Senior choirs, and an ensemble of the Senior Choir called the Consort.

SCC in Sherborne, EnglandDesigned for children in 2nd through 8th grades, the choir provides weekly music education, rehearsals, and performance opportunities throughout the school year. (See box at left for currently scheduled performance dates.)

Keith Miller, 2009 Artist in Residence (c) Stephen MortonThe SCC also hosts an annual Artist in Residence program each spring.  Visiting artists work with the choir and local schools to highlight careers in the arts.

Summer Camp 2009Also, the last two weeks of July, the choir provides an annual Summer Choral Camp (for 2nd through 8th graders) and an annual Mini-Choral Camp (for 4-7 year olds) which gives musically-interested kids a fun way to learn about music.  The Summer Choral Camp also serves as the primary audition into the Choir.

SCC in Wells Cathedral ChanceryThis past year, the Preparatory Choir traveled to Chattanooga, Tennessee for a regional tour, and the Senior Choir participated in the Somerset International Youth Choral Festival, where they sang in  Wells Cathedral and Sherborne Abbey.
