Keith Miller

The Savannah Children's Choir, with support from the City of Savannah, announces their 2009 Artist in Residence Program.

Keith Miller played college and professional football before he started making his living on the stage. His transition from football to opera began while playing college ball then for the University of Colorado when he saw a production of “Phantom of the Opera.”

“I had never seen an opera before,” he has said. “I had the same emotions at the opera I had at the game, from the theatrics, the fireworks and the music. I was blown away!”

After Miller played professional football for five years on reserve rosters for the Denver Broncos, he started his shift toward music in earnest. Since then, he has appeared internationally, and the bass/baritone is now on New York's Metropolitan Opera's roster, appearing in “Madame Butterfly,” “Rigoletto” and “Macbeth,” among others.

"We laughingly call this 'Putting the 'M' back in Music'," comments Artistic Director Roger Moss.  "We've noticed that boys reach a point where peer or family pressure encourages them to leave the arts for sports and other activities.  We want to show that choral music is a team sport and singers are athletes, and Mr. Miller's story is a compelling example."

Mr. Miller has rehearsed with the Savannah Children's Choir, made presentations to local schools, and gave a free public recital on Thursday, May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Lucas Theater.
